Ruben Gutierrez began selling paletas from a pushcart in Modesto, California, in 1991, in the tradition of street venders in many Hispanic countries. He soon gained a reputation for selling only authentic paletas, and with his increasing customers, he couldn’t carry enough in his small pushcart to satisfy them. With a $500 loan from family members, Ruben found a workspace in 1991 where he began making paletas and other ice cream products in large enough quantities to satisfy the growing demand. Today, Ruben and his family and staff continue to make paletas the authentic way, using the same preparation and premium ingredients that made his paletas so overwhelmingly popular.
